ALEXANDRE DA CUNHA

Office Baroque is presents the first solo exhibition of Alexandre da Cunha in Belgium at our downtown gallery on Bloemenhofplein 5 Place du Jardin aux Fleurs.

The new body of work for the exhibition at Office Baroque consists of wall-based canvases as well as a large wall based sculpture. These monochromatic works use objects as diverse as seashells, pillows, t-shirts, jumpers, trivets, bags, and beach towels that are sewn between layers, giving the works an ambiguity of surface. The incorporation of found objects has continuously been present in the work of da Cunha. Fortunate encounters with objects that are picked on the way inform his relationship with materials because of their shape, their original function and their cultural use. Meandering between intimate and delicate supports, but grounded in a material aesthetic and ethic, da Cunha examines the qualities of the objects that surround us and the reciprocal exchanges we entertain with them.

Alexandre da Cunha was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1969 and lives and works in London and Sao Paolo. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Thomas Dane Gallery, London; Galeria Luisa Strina, São Paulo; CRG Gallery, New York; Camden Arts Centre, London and CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco. His work has appeared in group exhibitions at ICA Boston, Boston; Zabludowicz Collection, London; Musee d’Art Modern de la Ville, Paris; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Chicago; Witte De With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam and the 30th Sao Paulo Biennial. His work is included in the collections of Tate Modern, London; Inhotim, Brumadinho; Rennie Collection, Vancouver and Pinacoteca do Estado de Sao Paulo. In the Spring of 2017 da Cunha will have a solo exhibition at Pivô in Sao Paolo.
