Elipzo-Bome - 2017
MICHAEL REY
Office Baroque presents
the second solo exhibition of Michael Rey at our midtown gallery on
Ravensteinstraat 44 Rue Ravenstein.
Rey initiates the process of
making his monochromes by carefully applying a layer of plasticine onto wood
panels to create a ground for oil paint. The result has the delicate
vulnerability of skin. In the new works, Rey’s attentiveness to surface
articulation is further enhanced by furrowed radial lines that intimate the
softness and substantiality of the impressionable top layer.
The works are solid yet
ephemeral, immediate yet ultimately unknowable. Each shape and color combination
is part of a visual lexicon. Asked to elaborate on the new work, Rey responded
with a tongue-in-cheek taxonomy:
Jockte Lakid: A breath-filled sac at war with the brain. The currency of electrocuted trees.
Gaba-Stobbe: Humid and Obtuse.
J-III: The suspended state of the proletariat. A sugar-based badge of magic and power.
VOLPKE: A celestial blanket cast over bones and wet cement.
